Celilo Wyam preserves and honors the memory and ongoing significance of Celilo Falls on the Columbia River, one of the most important Indigenous fishing and gathering sites in North America for thousands of years. The falls, known as Wyam ("sound of water upon the rocks"), were flooded on March 10, 1957, by the construction of The Dalles Dam. The Celilo Wy-Am Longhouse at Celilo Village serves as a cultural and spiritual center for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, the Yakama Nation, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, and the Nez Perce Tribe. Celilo remains a living center of Indigenous fishing rights, ceremony, and cultural continuity along the Columbia.
