Last month, Regenerate Whatcom hosted a permaculture bike tour through the Birchwood neighborhood of Bellingham, bringing together roughly forty participants to visit seven gardens and learn from the people stewarding them. Traveling by bicycle allowed us to experience the neighborhood at a pace that enabled observation, conversation, and connection, while highlighting the relationships between food, water, community, and place that often go unnoticed in daily life.

The experience left me reflecting on what resilience and regeneration look like in practice. Rather than distant plans or abstract frameworks, we spent an afternoon moving through a community, sharing stories, learning from one another, and witnessing tangible examples of care for land and neighbors. This photo essay and reflection explores those themes through the lens of a day spent pedaling between gardens in Birchwood.
