Regenerative by Design: How Soil, Water, and Carbon Cycles Shape Our Future

For the final event in our energy speaker series, we step off campus and into the living laboratory of Inspiration Farm. Join Brian Kerkvliet, regenerative farmer, educator, and co-steward of this permaculture demonstration site, for a grounded conversation at the intersection of land use, food systems, water, and climate resilience

Through the lens of permaculture, Brian will explore how intentional design can restore balance to the carbon, water, and nitrogen cycles, while producing nutritious food, capturing and storing energy, and building long-term ecological and community health. This 1-hour session will take place on-site at the farm and include dialogue, demonstration, and a systems-level perspective on how to meet this moment with regeneration rather than extraction.

The work party will take place at the rewilding project of Hunter Lydon. The project began in 2020 and, in 2022, hosted an Earthworks class led by Brian Kerkvliet.

Come see the value in bringing water onto land and lend a hand with soil preparation for future plantings.

It’s a wet set, a seasonal wetland, so please bring rain boots and clothes to get dirty in. Water and snacks are not a bad idea too.

Its a raw site with no structures or bathroom. There is a spot to relieve yourself under the cover of trees, though.

Brian Kerkvliet

As a co-steward of Inspiration Farm for the past 20 + years, Brian has a wide breadth of practical knowledge on how to partner with natural systems to bring forth stability and abundance. Being interested in gardening and appropriate technology since I was a kid, I have followed a path towards a regenerative lifestyle. Inspired by my grandpa Jerry who ran an integrated farm on South Whidbey island. He was visited by Bill Mollison in the early 70's. After taking many short workshops on animals, grafting, gardening etc. my wife took a PDC with the Bullock brothers which I visited often. We held a PDC in 2009 here at Inspiration Farm featuring Robin Francis and Doug Bullock as instructors among others. Inspiration Farm is an 13 acre homestead styled farm since 1994. Integrating Biodynamic and Permaculture practices in relation to annual & perennial food systems, animal husbandry, appropriate technology, land/water nutrient management. Currently we have 1.5 acres in annual production and 2 acres of fruit, nut and other perennials. We have chickens, milk cow, goats and raise turkeys and pigs most years. Our vision at Inspiration Farm is to co-create an environment to experiment and learn methods of creative and regenerative, resilient thriving. Biodynamic farming is a type of organic farming that incorporates an understanding of natural dynamic forces not yet fully understood by science. By working creatively with these subtle energies, we are able to significantly enhance the health of our farm affecting the quality of the soil, nutrition and flavor of the food grown. Throughout the year we have a variety of Events, Tours and Workshops. This year we are hosting several workshops on permaculture and sustainable practices.
