Something exciting is coming up in the north of the bioregion. On Friday, July 17, the Regenerate Whatcom landscape group will host its first full day of bioregional mapping, the first of our landscape groups to do so.
From 9:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon, neighbors will gather at Rome Grange, along the Mt. Baker Highway, to trace the waters, soils, species, and stories that make their home landscape what it is, and to begin turning that shared picture into a foundation for local work.
Why bioregional mapping
Bioregional mapping is how a community comes to know and love its life-place. A map can cut a living place into jurisdictions, or it can help the people who live there see the whole of where they are: the watersheds and the ridgelines, the plants and the animals, the histories and the hopes. When neighbors map their own landscape together, they build a shared foundation for the work of caring for it.
We are proud of Whatcom for leading the way, and we look forward to supporting more of our landscapes as they map their own life-places in the seasons to come.
