We’ll discuss the process of putting together a bioregional anthology & show slides to illustrate how the bioregional theme: 1) elicited design decisions & 2) guided curation of artwork, poetry, essays & interviews of contributors, including choices around diversity & indigenous participants. For example, Robert Bringhurst, world renowned typographer, created glyphs to support the indigenous & Asian languages. We’ll discuss how others may go about similar bioregionally-minded efforts.

Defining features of Cascadia bioregion. What’s meant in terms of curation/design features. Why Zen? Range of contributors: photo collage of poets, essayists, artists; slides with x’s where contributors live; Examples of diversity, examples of artwork. Why we called sections “baskets.” Use of maps as design feature throughout; Hurdles & intended audience.

Statement of Value: Climate crisis is a symptom of human disconnect from the mind of place; compels us to find our proper role to help solve climate breakage one watershed, one bioregion at a time. Created via a 30 year old organization, Cascadian Zen is a stunning compilation of insightful poetic, philosophic & visual responses to the bioregion which we hope will serve as inspiration to readers & those who’d create something for their own bioregions. The bioregional concept communicates an anti-colonial stance.
