More About Myself |
Kathryn is a consultant, author, educator, and expert in ethics, systems thinking and change. Kathryn’s shift to nature as the expert, provided a strong framework for effective and harmonious change, in sync with nature – the largest system. The discovery of the biotic pump and the meta crisis we are facing, drove Kathryn to shift her focus into the education and application of this new systems understanding of how rain is formed and how the planet has been cooling itself since the beginning. Starting a non-profit called Soil Smart – Soil Wise to help cities strengthen their bionic pump. Urban forestry, land developers and residents are all able to partner with farmers to revitalize their area. Resilience is possible, and it will be easier if we start now! |
About The Work I Do | Soil smart – Soil Wise is dedicated to shifting cities into resilience by strengthening the biotic pump. The biotic pump is the natural system by which nature cools the planet, through rain that feeds the atmospheric rivers. By enlivening the soil, through compost, biochar, and biologics, and then using regenerative landscape design so that the land is designed to hold water, the foundation is laid for the creation of a ‘sponge city.’ By adding Miyawaki mini forests, the pump is strengthened and resilience becomes reality. Keeping the water we get is a crucial resilience strategy! |
Why do you feel like your work or bioregionalism is important for the future of the Cascadia Bioregion? | Learning to live for LIFE is a key to survival. Life LOVES life! We can trust that, so understanding her values, principles, and the biotic pump, gives us the confidence and direction we need to engage with this meta crisis in effective ways. The biotic pump is a global phenomenon, that is developed locally. The larger the region that adopts this practice, then the stronger and more stable the rain scape becomes, to everyone’s advantage. The various aspects are not difficult to understand or do, but it does take time (3 years) for mini forests to become established, so starting NOW is imperative. |
